API keys · NewsAPI

Set up your NewsAPI key.

NewsAPI supplies the headlines on the News page and dashboard, and the recent company and sector news Analytics reads for its sentiment score. The free plan is all you need.

1. Create a free account

  1. Go to newsapi.org/register.
  2. Enter your name, email and a password, choose the individual option, and agree to the terms.
  3. Your API key is shown as soon as you register. Copy it.

You can find the key again any time on your NewsAPI account page.

2. Add it to Soritch

  1. Open Settings (gear button at the bottom of the sidebar).
  2. Under Data sources, paste the key into NewsAPI key.
  3. Click Save. The field now shows dots and the last four characters of your key, which means it’s stored.

3. Check it works

Open the News page. Headlines should load in the Holdings, Markets and World feeds within a few seconds. Saving a new key clears old cached headlines, so you get a fresh set.

Limits and troubleshooting

  • The free Developer plan allows 100 requests a day. Soritch caches headlines, so normal use stays well under it. See NewsAPI pricing for paid plans.
  • Headlines stopped loading later in the day — you’ve probably used the day’s requests. They return the next day.
  • “Invalid API key” — the key was pasted incompletely or has been regenerated. Copy it again from your account page.
  • No key — News shows a reminder, and Analytics treats sentiment as neutral. Everything else works.
Treat an API key like a password. Don’t share it or post it in a screenshot. Soritch stores it only on this computer, shows just its last four characters once saved, and leaves it out of backups unless you choose to include it. If a key leaks, delete it on the provider’s site and create a new one.
